Introduction

Your Placements Portfolio (for Science) will be built using a template provided by the Placements Team in Science.

The template is a Mahara Collection consisting of 4 pages. This guide provides instructions for the basic tasks you will need for the creation and submission of your portfolio.

Prior to the start of your placement

You are expected to complete the "The key to me" section of the portfolio prior to the start of your placement.

First meeting with your manager

If not already arranged, you should arrange a meeting with your manager to go through the “Setting expectations” section of your Placements Portfolio.

Before the meeting

Share your portfolio with your manager so that they have an opportunity to view the questions and also your “Key to Me” section.

During the meeting

Capture a summary of the discussion and then ask your manager to add a comment to confirm that it is an accurate reflection of the agreements made.

This will help ensure that you have a clear understanding of your managers expectations, and you have had the opportunity to share any circumstances that need to be taken into consideration.

Reflection and development record

The purpose of the portfolio is to set long-term objectives, and for progress and reflection to be captured against these regularly.

It should not be used to capture daily/weekly tasks.

It is expected that your manager’s feedback is captured through comments.

Placement skills development

You will be expected to provide descriptive evidence of how you developed your skills during your placement.

These skills are matched against the learning objectives of your placements unit.

You will also need to ask your manager/supervisor to provide their feedback comments.
